The Dangers of Using a Space Heater

Many homeowners have the one room or space in their home that just doesn’t ever seem to warm up during the winter months. It can be annoying and frustrating to deal with a problem like this, as you don’t want to raise the temperature throughout your entire home just to warm up this one spot. A solution for many dealing with this issue is to purchase and use a space heater, but this is ill-advised for a few reasons that we’ll outline below.

Problems with Space Heaters

Here are some of the more common problems we have come across in regard to space heaters:

  • Overheating – while most of today’s space heaters come with safety controls to prevent overheating, these controls can sometimes be faulty. Additionally, if you are using a combustion space heater, such as a kerosene heater, the ability of the heater to become too hot is greatly increased. Overheating can cause melting of the heater’s components and the outside casing of the unit, which is a very dangerous situation.
  • Toppling – it may seem like a hard thing to do, but you’d be surprised how many people trip over the electrical cord of a small, electric space heater and knock it over. Should the heater fall while operating, you run the risk of burning yourself and even starting a fire.
  • Fire – space heaters get very hot during operation. As such, it is absolutely necessary to make sure that there are no flammable objects within 3 feet of the heater. If there are, these objects can be heated to the point of ignition.
